CWS: Friends And Foes
By Doug Kroll - June 18, 2007
They're the best of friends, UC Irvine head coach Dave Serrano and Fullerton head coach George Horton. Serrano used to be the pitching coach with the Titans, but on this day, they are foes. I'm sure they even went out and had a steak last night, but unfortunately for the Big West, somebody is heading back home to California after this one today. In our second elimination game of the week, The Anteaters and Titans will meet for the right to stay alive another day.
We have a pretty good pitching matchup, as two rightys will toe the rubber.
For Fullerton, Jeff Kaplan will take the hill. Kaplan is 11-3 with a 3.16 ERA in 18 starts (19 games overall), and has 80 homeruns in 116.2 innings this year.
Fellow righty Wes Etheridge will throw for the Eaters, and he's been real real good this year. Etheridge has racked up 111 strikeouts in 126.1 innings, and is 12-4 with a 2.49 ERA. He's also only walked 28 guys.
These two teams know each other real well. In a series that has been cominated by Fullerton throughout the years, this was the first time since 1980 that Irvine picked up a series victory over the Titans, as they took two-of-three at Fullerton the first weekend of April.
In 2006, the Titans took four of the six games they played against one another.
It's a battle between two Big West teams, on the game's biggest stage, and it will be a battle for I-5, as the schools are only located about 17 miles apart.
The weather doesn't look that great, big dark ominous clouds overhead and off in the distance. A front is just west of here and will be pushing through this afternoon with thunderstorms building off to the west and rolling through. Looks like a line is pushing through Grand Island at the moment, so we may get wet at some point today. But the temperature is much, much cooler than what we saw the first couple of days. Gametime temperature will end up being about 15 degrees cooler than what we've seen, as it currently sits at 75 with overcast skies, and the wind has changed direction, now blowing from left to right, (from the west at 15mph, gusting to 25).
If there's a rain delay, we'll be back on here, but for now, as always, enjoy the game, as Gametracker will keep you updated on everything you need to know, and we'll be back after with analysis and quotes and all the other good stuff from Rosenblatt.

Considering that I witnessed the Titans beating my Trojans in the 1995 CWS while I was an undergrad at USC, I never thought I would think, say or write the following -- Go Titans! Yet since they are my pick, I'm hoping they don't 0-2 barbeque today.
Fight on!
