CWS: It Had To End Some Time
By Doug Kroll - June 18, 2007
There were times during UC Irvine's 13 inning 5:40 win that some people never thought this thing was going to end. I was ctually surpised there's never been a longer game in CWS history, as we beat the record by 40 minutes. I have to give credit to Mark Etheridge for being right about seeing a really lon ggame. That's the reputation for West Coast baseball, especially in the Big West. The guys step out, the coaches change signs, they make their fair share of pitching changes and mound visits. Next thing you know we're in the 13th 5 hours and 40 minutes later.
What makes this game even more crazy is the fact that the Anteaters ended up committing six errors on the day. Six different Eaters had them, including three guys who made their first errors of the year. This was a game full of fantastic at bats, and fantastic baseball, despite the errors and walks and hit by pitches.
In the sixth, Taylor Holiday launched a two run homerun to tie the game at 3-3, but in the top of the 7th, Corey Jones of Fullerton was hit by a pitch in the hand that looked like it glanced off the bat for a foul ball. The bases were loaded and credit an RBI to Jones and give Fullerton the 4-3 lead. Then came one of the best AB's of the day. Cody Cipriano on the 14th pitch of the AB, launched a long homerun to rightfield to tie the game at 4-4 in bottom of the 7th.
The game-winning run sequence was a rather weird one. UC Irvine leadoff man Taylor Holiday clearly stuck his arm over the plate to get hit by a pitch, which put Holiday on first, and after three seperate trips out to the homeplate umpire, Fullerton coach George Horton was tossed.
After a SAC bunt and a walk, runners were on 1st and 2nd with one out for Matt Morris who ripped a basehit to leftfield and Holiday rounded third and headed to the plate. Josh Fellhauer scopped up the ball, and threw home and absolutely nailed Holiday at the plate after a gorgeous block by John Curtis. On the play, the runners moved up to 2nd and 3rd, and Fullerton changed pitchers, taking out Bryan Harris.
The lefty dealt to Bryan Petersen who lined a basehit back up the box that scored the game winning run, and the mentor had beaten the coach.
After the game, UC Irvine coach Dave Serrano talked about what it was like after the game when the two embraced behind home plate.
"I love you, I'm proud of you, and go and win this thing," is what Horton said to Serrano.
"I had to say goodbye to second father, mentor, coach, that's the toughest part about it. We both knew going into this that one of us was going to be happy and one of us was going to be sad," Serrano said.
"This was classic West Coast baseball, and I hope a lot of people got to see that," is the other thing that came out of his presser. And that was certainly a crazy one.
The Anteater nation is still alive, as they will now face the loser of Oregon State-Arizona State on Tuesday, while Fullerton heads home after a year in which I'm not sure they even thought they'd make it this far.
