CWS: Louisville Wins First CWS Game

By Doug Kroll - June 17, 2007

In a year of firsts for Louisville, first year head coach Dan McDonnell has won the program's first CWS game, by defeating the Bulldogs of Mississippi State, 12-4. A power display is all that can be said about this Louisville team. They threw up 18 more hits on the board, and launched four homeruns, including two by third baseman Chris Dominguez.

Dominguez hit his seventh and eighth homers of the postseason, since the Regionals in Columbia. It's an unbelievable streak after hitting seven all season long.

Elimination games is when the Cardinals have really come alive. They faced elimination three times in Columbia, another time at home against Oklahoma State, and then today, and each time, they have come out like gangbusters. It's just awesome to watch. The Cards are now hitting .370 in the NCAA Tournament, while averaging 9.9 runs per game, and 14.8 hits per contest. They have also reached double figures in five of their 10 Tournament games.

The big storyline of today before today was how coach McDonnell would be facing his former big rival when he was with Ole Miss the last few years. One would have to think that Ole Miss fans were rootin' real hard for McDonnell and the Cards to knock off the Bulldogs.

State has to be real happy with their season, as nobody had them going anywhere this year, let alone Rosenblatt. They were picked to finish last in the SEC West by the coaches, but they fought and got hot at the right time after the SEC Tournament and knocked off a national seed in FSU, then beat a real good Clemson team. Polk did an excellent job with this bunch to get them here, and when they get back to Starkville, you'd have to think they'll look back at this year as a success, even as disappointed as the guys will be that their season is over.

A couple of Polk quotes about the game and their season...

"Great contageous hitting early in the ballgame. They're a ballclub that's been hot the last couple of weeks with the bat. They did a great job at Mizzou and hosting Okla. State. I'm disappointed, but I've been through this before. Just have to tip your cap as they played better than we did. Their third baseman is a hoss, he's a big boy. He had 85 strikeouts but, We couldn't find that strikeout tonight."

"Im proud of the boys, great group of guys. I'm disappointed for them, but it was a great season. We had a heck of a club, but you got to score runs. Two days ago we probably had a better chance to win the ballgame than we did today."

McDonnell is just real happy about his bunch putting up 42 runs in the last three games, but at this point in the year, he doesn't care how they win, whether it's one run wins or a game like today when it was really never in doubt. He also talked about his big bopper in Dominguez.

"Chris is one of the most talented players I've ever coached. He had an unbelievable fall for us, hitting seven or eight homers in four weeks then. You see what he can do in batting practice, and he's really matured as the season has gone on. He can stand there and hit 15 out in a row to left, but he's learned that's not good for his swing," McDonnell said about his slugging third baseman.

McDonnell continued talking about how big a win it was not only for Louisville but for the Big East conference. And it certainly was. It was interesting to hear him say that his team didn't have to win today to justify the Cards making it to Omaha. And I would agree. They deserved to be here as much as anyone, and a win today is just icing on the cake.

It was only the second time in Big East history (since 1985) that a team won a CWS game, with Louisville joining Notre Dame who went 1-2 back in 2002.

What Does This Mean?
Louisville will now play the loser of Rice/North Carolina on Tuesday in another elimination games. You know what that means, lots and lots of runs for the Cards!

Player Of The Game
It has to go to Chris Dominguez who hit two more homeruns to bring his total to 15 on the season, while driving in three runs by going 2-for-4 today. His second homerun was one of the longest longballs I've ever seen. It landed in the very last row of the bleachers in left, just missing the scoreboard up there. It's remarkable what he's done since the calendar turned to June.

Give a game ball to Justin Marks who went 5.1 innings giving up four hits, three runs, and striking out five. The freshman continued to show why he's top of the line, as he picked up his ninth win of the season. I think that this Louisville pitching staff is being overshadowed by the tremendous output of their offense. But make no bones about it, this staff is one of the best here, and they showed it again today on a day that saw the wind gusting out up to 35 mph, they held the Bulldogs to only three runs.
