CWS: Planting A Seed

By Doug Kroll - June 17, 2007

This is the one a lot of us have been waiting for. Two national seeds are getting set to get underway here in Omaha as North Carolina and Rice will do battle with the right to remain in the winner's bracket. It's got the makings of being a CWS classic.

Rice will be the visitor, as they come in with a record of 55-12, while UNC comes in with a record of 54-13 on the season, and each picked up a comeback victory last time out in impressive fashion.

The pitching matchup looks good, with the Owls sending lefty junior Joe Savery to the hill. Savery is 10-1 on the season with a 2.78 ERA in 17 starts. Opponents are hitting just .239 against him, and has 57 K's in 87.1 innings.

North Carolina will send out an impressive freshman, as Alex White will take the bump. White is 6-5 with a 4.22 ERA in 16 starts (17 appearances). He's got 80 K's in 91.2 innings, but has really struggled in the postseason, getting lit up by East Carolina in the Regioals and then by South Carolina in the Super Regionals last weekend. He's due for a good performance but it won't come easy against a Rice lineup that has no one hitting under .300. I'd say that's pretty good.

No surprises in the lineup, the only change is with Rice as J.P. Padron will play first due to Savery being on the hill.

As always, enjoy the game everybody, and follow along with Gametracker. CSTV.com will return after the game with postgame analysis after the press conferences, plus a daily recap with some video and a preview of tomorrow's West Coast action as well.
