CWS: Rice For Real
By Doug Kroll - June 17, 2007
The Rice Owls are here to win it all. Plain and simple. They beat up on the North Carolina pitching staff and won it running away, 14-4. The Tar Heels used a College World Series record eight pitchers in the defeat, with Alex White proving ineffective once again, only lasting 1.1 innings giving up six earned runs and five hits.
After a scoreless first in which White looked really good, Rice came out swinging in the second putting up a six spot. Joe Savery and Jess Buenger each had RBI singles to start the scoring, and then Brian Friday nailed a two run double up the gap to double the lead and make it 4-0.
Then a weird play. Matt Danford was the new pitcher in the ball game for White, and with runners on first and third with one out, Danford looked as if he had picked off Friday at third, he then got in a rundown and was tagged out by third baseman Chad Flack, but first base umpire David Buck had called a buck, so everything was washed away. Instead of there being two outs and a runner on third, there was only one out with run scored and a runner on third. Ouch. Jared Gayhart capped the scoring in the inning with a SAC Fly to make it 6-0.
That's all the Owls would need, but they would taack on a run in the third, two in the fourth and fith, one in the seventh, and two more in the top of the ninth. They pounded out 14 hits on the evening, with everyone getting into the party act.
Joe Savery pitched a whale of a game in picking up his 11th win of the season.
Rice remains in the winner's bracket, and now North Carolina faces Louisville on Tuesday to determine who sticks around, and who goes home. The Owls are off until Wednesday now, a huge bonus.
More to come from Rosenblatt.
