CWS: What To Do On An Off Day...
By Doug Kroll - June 23, 2007
Ever wonder what that big dome structure is over the rightfield wall at Rosenblatt Stadium? If you're like me, I sure did for years watching the CWS, and even when they would tell me it's part of the zoo, I still didn't know what was actually inside the crystal looking mammoth dome.
Friday was an off day here in Omaha, and after the press conferences were over, it was off to Zesto's to have "The Best Cheeseburger In Town" and a world-famous milkshake. The Going Yard guys profiled the place yesterday, and you can see just how they do it, by clicking here.
It was then back to the hotel to do a little off-day work, but the amazing thing about that zoo is that when a bunch of the media all looked around on Thursday night sand said to each other,"What are we going to do tomorrow?" Everyone at the same time said,"The zoo."
Now, you've seen pictures from Glenn Tanner this week of some monkeys, and let me tell you, it's worth the price of admission. Glenn even mentioned to me that it's better than the famed San Diego Zoo, and to be honest, after not being out at that one in a few years, the Omaha Zoo may have taken the top spot in my top zoos.
Matt and Evan from Going Yard, Aaron Fitt from Baseball America, my dad, and others, took off for the zoo and were certainly not disappointed. Besides the fact that it felt like Miami in the summer, it was loads of fun (I still can't believe how much I really liked it.)
I've never been an animal guy, but between the elephant that ended up reaching across the barrier to eat plants about five feet from us, to the gorilla who was demonstrating on his own how territorial they are by pounding his chest and smashing his fist into the window several times, it was a great day.
That gorilla by the way was just about the craziest one i've ever seen. He'd run around the whole thing, smash into the window, then he even tried to open the gate by yanking on it for about 20 seconds. They are one strong creature.
And then it was time for the Desert Dome, yep, that's what it's called in there. It's a desert display with sand and pumas and so many other creatures that one would find in the deserts of the world.
Next thing we knew, we'd been there for about three hours and it was closing time. Not wanting to spend our evening with the animals, it was back to the hotel, and after just avoiding some titanic thunderstorms that have just smashed Iowa the last couple days. Somehow they have avoided us here in Omaha, but those folks in Eastern Iowa, yikes.
We had a steak dinner earlier in the week, but it was time for another, after all, we're in Omaha. So we checked out one of the famous ones, Cascio's, on a tip from former Big 12 media coordinator Bo Carter. While they gave us tons of food, soup, salad, steak, side of pasta, potato, and coffee/tea, the actual steak didn't live up to the place we went last week, The Drover. That place has the whiskey steak and I highly recommend checking it out if you're in town.
At that point it was pretty late, and having the sun out until about 9:30 each night is really deceiving as to what time it is. We're all in a little bit of baseball withdrawal after having so many games over the last week and change.
We get right back to it tonight with the CWS Finals getting underway between Oregon State and North Carolina.
