Fayetteville: Back for Day 2 - Creighton v. Albany
By Jean Neuberger - June 02, 2007
It's a warm, overcast day here at Fayetteville's Baum Stadium, as we get set for the second day of action here at the 2007 NCAA Fayetteville Regional.
We open off with the elimination game, with Jim Mueller and his Albany Great Danes looking for their first ever NCAA Regional victory. Standing in their way are Ed Servais and the Creighton Bluejays, who look to bounce back from a somewhat surprising loss to Oklahoma State.
Right now, most of the media is getting fed over at the Tyson Track Center next door, but we have abour four of us here in the press box, along with the CSTV guys next door, who need no food (or sleep) to get psyched for today's action.
I must add, per Arkansas SID Josh Maxson, that the Razorbacks weren't very happy with Doug Kroll's labeling of the team as a possible upset team. On the other hand, it's good to know they're reading CSTV.com (even though yours truly said the Hogs were the team to beat).
Ok, on to today's first matchup.
Most everyone figured Albany would be playing this afternoon. Few picked the Jays to be here though. Creighton, who has been one of the hottest teams in America, spotted slumping OSU four runs in the top of the first and never could get back over the hump. During practice, Ed Servais was watching every move his team made, and the Jays were taking warm-ups as serious as I've ever seen them. Make no mistake, Creighton has dreams that go beyond Fayetteville, so they will throw everything they have into winning this game.
As for Albany, well, what can you say? The Great Danes were just overwhelmed by a much better Arkansas team last night. Albany's never faced a team this season that was the caliber of the Razorbacks, and though they battled gallantly, they really had no chance against the Hogs. UAlbany though is very relaxed and enjoying the moment, which is exactly what they need to do. The Danes know their season will likely end at Baum Stadium, so they might as well live for the moment.
So, who will prevail? The serious workhorse Jays or the relaxed, easygoing Great Danes?
We'll find out in about 20 minutes.
Here's today's edge matchups....
Starting Pitching: Edge to Creighton
Relief Pitching: Edge to Creighton
Hitting: Edge to Creighton
Fielding: Huge Edge to Creighton
Power: Even
Speed: Even
Looks like the Jays should win...then again, Vanderbilt should've had no trouble with Austin Peay. Every non-national #1 seed (especially Coastal Carolina) has to be shaking their head at #8 national seed San Diego losing to Fresno State as well, so anything can happen.
Starting Pitchers:
Creighton - RHP Zak Moore (5-1, 3.61 ERA)
Albany - LHP Cory Warrings (3-4, 4.84 ERA)
We're set to go here at Baum...it's Creighton and Albany. Winner goes on, loser goes home.
