Fayetteville: Fans Enjoying Ugly Baseball

By Jean Neuberger - June 02, 2007

It's not been the prettiest baseball, but it IS close baseball, and the fans are really enjoying what's been an interesting two innings here at Baum Stadium.

First things first...speed kills, and right now, it's killing Albany. Creighton started another two-out rally in the top of the second, led by a double from DH Brett Mieras. Albany's Cory Warrings walked the next two batters, bringing up Ross Sinclair. Sinclair's routine grounder to short took forever for Albany SS Sean Donovan to get out of his glove, and Robbie Knight was able to beat the fielder's choice throw to second, allowing Mieras to score from third.

Albany loaded the bases as well in the bottom of the second, but Leo Corvino would ground out to third. The biggest problem for the Danes is that, with two well-hit singles to start their rally, they should've had runners at the corners. Instead, their lack of speed kept Steve Sayre at second, and that's going to cost them.

On another note, the cheer from the Arkansas fans in the Albany section has been verified by Arkansas student section leader Kyle Thompson to be "Wooo, Alb Dane!" The Arkansas students have played this one smart, putting half the section on the Albany side, and the other half on the Creighton side. No doubt, it's working, as fans from both sides said they'll root for Arkansas in the nightcap.

1-1 as we head to the third.
