Fullerton: Got Any Extra Tickets?
By Jason Owens - June 10, 2007
I love walking through the parking lot at a sporting event with a computer strapped over my shoulder and my media credential in full view and having somebody ask me if I have any extra tickets. No; I don't have any extra tickets.
It happens at pretty much every sold-out event that I cover and it never ceases to amaze me when people don't put two and two together. Anyhow, the point is that Fullerton fans are sensing a clincher tonight and the demand appears high for what could be the last home game of the season before a trip to Omaha.
They sense a win tonight with good reason. Nothing from UCLA's performance on Saturday prompted me to believe that they're going to put up a fight tonight, even if Bruins Coach John Savage doesn't think it will be tough to bounce back from a 12-2 drubbing (he said so in the press conference). Maybe he knows something that I don't.
The Titans were better in every aspect of play on Saturday, have another rowdy home crowd and are starting a pitcher with better credentials.
Jeff Kaplan takes the mound for Fullerton and sports an 11-3 record and 3.35 ERA. UCLA's Gavin Brooks brings a not quite as impressive 6-6 record and 4.65 ERA to the table. One of Kaplan's wins came in a regular season matchup with UCLA where he allowed three runs in 6.2 innings. Brooks, meanwhile, took the loss for the Bruins in the rubber game of that same series.
So most signs point to another Fullerton win. But the Bruins do have some hope to hang their hats on. Brooks has been hot lately, winning three straight, including two complete games. He'll have to have another solid performance tonight to slow down the red-hot Fullerton bats that are averaging just a shade under 9.5 runs per game for the last seven games.
If he doesn't, we could be looking at another blowout.
I'll check back in after the game with all of the juicy details. Until then, catch all the live action on Gametracker
