Houston: It is a final

By Jonathan Yardley - June 01, 2007

Day one of the Houston Regional is in the books, and favorites Rice and TCU both held form. Predictably, Rice did not have to sweat quite as much for its win - partially because the Owls were playing at night and partially because of dominant pitching and six Prairie View errors.

Rice won the nightcap 5-0 behind shutout pitching from Matt Langwell and Bobby Bramhall. PV stayed in the game until falling apart with four errors over the final two defensive innings that led to three runs.

Rice scored three runs in the seventh and eighth on no hits. The Owls benefited from two batters hit by a pitch, one walk and four Prairie View errors. Rice ended up out-hitting PV 6-5 for the game.

Honestly, this is what a No. 1 vs. a No. 4 seed should look like. Matthew Chase held Prairie View in the game for six-plus innings, but Prairie View never could really threaten thanks to a strong start from Langwell.

It was a beautiful day to watch baseball, and there are still some high school playoff games going on in the area, so we'll talk to you tomorrow with Prairie View-Baylor and TCU-Rice. Maybe we'll even figure out how this picture thing works. Baylor and TCU will be home tomorrow.

"The Owls benefited from two batters hit by a pitch"

I thought there were 3 HBPs... Dodson twice (something about that #7 jersey), plus Friday. Wait, technically I guess that's only 2 batters HBP with one getting hit twice, but I'm not sure that's what you meant.
