Houston: Rice runs = PV errors

By Jonathan Yardley - June 01, 2007

Rice has expanded its lead to 4-0 as we go to the eighth. Starter Matt Langwell had a hiccup in the seventh but has struck out eight batters against just one walk through seven innings. Rice will probably try to get as much out of Langwell as possible to save Cole St.Clair and Bobby Bramhall in the bullpen.

Langwell got some needed run support in the seventh even though Rice did not have a hit in the inning.

With Chase visibly tiring, Prairie View delivered the Little League play people expect of a SWAC team. With two runners on, Jared Gayhart laid a bunt down the first-base line. Chase came over to field the ball, angling himself to tag Gayhart. When the runner proved too fast, Chase was forced into a bad-angle throw from foul territory that got by first baseman Paul Johnson. Rightfielder Robert Tolan, backing up the play, air-mailed his throw to the plate to allow an additional run to score and make it 4-0.

Chase left the game to an ovation, allowing three earned runs in six innings. Reliever Terry Salter, who does not throw hard enough to break a pane of glass, got out of the inning without allowing any more damage. Rice scored two runs in the inning on no hits and leads 4-0 after seven innings.

Big cheer just now for the Brown 2, Texas 1 score. It's still early, folks.
