Myrtle Beach: First Run
By Doug Kroll - June 01, 2007
Putting the first run up on the board in any game can be crucial, but especially in a pitcher's duel. Moskos and Barnes have been toe-to-toe here in the fifth inning, but St. John's has gotten on the board first.
As mentioned before, this field is known as a pitcher's park, especially with a couple of staff aces on the mound. The wind from the ocean knocks most balls down, so it really takes a shot to get it outta here, even with the fences at 328 down the line and 400 to straightaway centerfield. They moved the leftfield fence in 10 feet this year, and it still took 589 batters to hit the first homerun over the new fence location.
Chris Joachim didn't care about those numbers. The Red Storm DH launched his second homerun of the year over that fence that kind of stunned everybody in attendance. The Johnnies have looked like the better team thus far, with seven hits to Clemson's three.
Barnes probably isn't the guy that Clemson head coach Jack Leggett wanted to run into today on the mound. He knew the pitching and defense would be there, but he knew it would be the bats that would have to come alive. So far, not so good in that department. But still plenty of time for the home team.
