Oxford: Game 1 quotes

By Chris Kieffer - June 01, 2007

Below are post-game quotes from Troy and Southern Miss

Troy head coach Bobby Pierce
"This game obviously did not start the way we had planned. We had some pretty routine defensive miscues that kind of took us out of the game right from the beginning of the game. At this venue in a regional tournament, games of this magnitude, it is very difficult when you put yourselves in a hole due to mistakes that you've made defensively especially when you have a guy on the mound that is going to pitch well and a team that is going to be difficult to score against. I didn't expect that from our ballclub. I thought that our experience would probably take us down the opposite road, but it was seniors players that made the mistakes, and I really don't have an answer for that."

Southern Miss head coach Corky Palmer
"We palyed a real complete game today. We swung the bats and Ryan (Bellanger) threw tremendous. The wind was blowing out, a hot day, a hitter's day. He gave up a few hits but he was able to come out of it. He didn't walk anybody. It was a hitter's day and he put a pretty good hitting team to bed pretty quick.
All around, probably the best we've swung it in a whole.

USM SS Brian Dozier
(on offensive production without leading hitter Trey Sutton)

We came out early on top. The biggest thing in the past has been our inabiliity to score consistently in innings; just having a couple of big innings and that's it. We did a great job today of scoring a lot of runs in the first inning and adding on after that which is big for us.
