Oxford: Game 2 wrap

By Chris Kieffer - June 02, 2007

Ole Miss defeats Sam Houston 14-5.
Zach Miller went 2-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs to lead Ole Miss, which had 12 hits. Jordan Henry, Cody Overbeck, Zack Cozart and Alex Kliman also had two hits each. Overbeck drove in four, and he and Logan Power each hit home runs.
Keith Stein and Nick Zaleski were each 2-for-4 for the Bearkats.
OM junior right hander Will Kline (7-2) allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits in six innings to earn the win. He walked five and fanned four. Justin Cryer allowed one hit and one walk in three scoreless innings to get his first career save.
SHS starter Jacob Howard (11-6) allowed eight runs (three earned) on seven hits in five innings.
The Bearkats were really hurt by three errors, two by third baseman Austin Boggs and one by shortstop Jeremy Holzbach.
SHS did not need to use closer Luke Prihoda, the national saves leader, and will have him available Saturday.
See game two quotes below.

Sam Houston State
Coach Mark Johnson

I thought Jacob Howard gave us a chance to win. Obviously we made three errors that were costly to us. Good teams take advantage of every time you make a mistake, and I thought Ole Miss did a good job when we would make a mistake of taking advantage of it.
I thought our guys came out ready to play. I think Ole Miss is a very good ballclub. I think we swung the bats pretty good. I thought we hit some balls pretty hard right at them and I wasn’t disappointed with the offense. We squared up pretty good and didn’t look like a team that hadn’t seen good pitching before. We struggled a little bit pitching, but a lot of our problems came on the three errors and we were hurt by all three of them. The guys who made the errors, I hope tomorrow the ball is hit to them. They are good players and they can make those plays. They’ve been steallar players all year.
We’ll show up tomorrow and we’re anxious to play tomorrow.

LF Bobby Verbick
(on responding after falling behind)
We were just warned coming out with the big crowd, if they did get ahead, just to stay within ourselves.I think we did a good job of staying in our game plan and I think that is why we were able to come back like we did early on.

Ole Miss
Coach Mike Bianco
Just a good game tonight. Will (Kline) would probably admit that he didn’t have his best stuff tonight, but I love the way that he competed tonight and he kept us in the game and gave us a shot to win. I thought it was a great offensive night by us starting in the first inning. We were able to get some big hits throughout the game. Great night by (Cody) Overbeck, great night by (Zach) Miller and certainly guys like (Zack) Cozart and (Justin) Henry. We made some great defensive plays, especailly in the outfield, to really snuff out some rallies.

Zach Miller
(on his night)
I was just seeing the ball well and trying to do what I had to do and get some runs for Will. Just seeing the ball great and just trying to hit the ball and make something happen.

Justin Henry
(on pulling away)
Yeah. It was good to see. Will had a rough inning there where they scored a couple of runs, but he really kept them at bay after that and it was good to see the offense swing the bats well tonight. We have runners on and we were able to get big hits and string hits together which is something we haven’t been able to do in a while consistently. It was a good start for us tonight and it was good to build on the lead. It was definitely good to be able to score 14 runs in a game.

Will Kline
I think everything was missing the whole game. It just wasn’t really my night. When the pitcher doesn’t have it, it is good for your offense to put up 14 runs. Like coach said in the meeting after the game, at this time of the year, it is not about ERA and stats, it is about winning baseball games and it feels good to win.

That wraps it up for me tonight. See you tomorrow.
