Oxford: wrap up

By Chris Kieffer - June 04, 2007

Rebel offfense got the most in championship game shootout. Ole Miss broke the school's NCAA Tournament runs record with 21. Alex Kliman and Justin Henry each had four hits for Ole Miss and Zach Miller and Zack Cozart both had four.
Sam Houston State continued the offensive mometum with its gutty victory in the first game of the day, but the Bearkats (40-24) ran out of pitching.
SHSU actually led 9-8 in the middle of the fourth, but Ole Miss put together a nine-run fourth in which everyone in the Rebel lineup scored and Ole Miss ran away.
OM pitcher Craig Rodriguez (2-2) allowed a run on two hits over 3.1 innings to stymie the Bearkat mometum and allow Ole Miss to run away with it.

Sam Houston State
coach Mark Johson
Obviously it’s a long day. We’ve been out here since 10:30 this morning.I feel like our guys played with a lot of heart, and I’m proud of them. I’m proud to be their coach.
Although I think Ole Miss was the best team in the regional and deserved to represent this regional, I think when we went at it so hard with Southern went to extra innings and had a lot of emotion with the ebb and flow and we all got into our bullpen pretty good, I think the team coming out of that game makes it a little rougher.
We went all the way to the bottom of our tank. Guys giving great effort. Pitchers giving great effort. Guys who hand’t pitched too much and Ole Miss absolutley squared up to every ball we threw up there. It was incredible how hard they hit the ball.I t found holes and they really were impressive to watch play. I was proud of our guys. We didn’t have too much left in the tank, but the heartbreat was still there.

SS Jeremy Holzback on emotion
I think we came into today knowing what we had to do and knowing that we were going to play two games regardless. We knew that if we were able to get the lead in the first game and hold onto it, we knew that if we gave the ball to Luke that he was going to give us a chance to win and we knew that our sticks were good enough to hold with anybody in the country to keep us in the game and keep us fighting.

We didn’t hold back agianst Ole Miss. WE scored three runs in the frist inning. We punched first and Ole Miss punched back and then we punched again. We weren’t going to let go. The emotion of this whole weekend was a new epxerience for all of us, but I hope it is something that this club and this team gets to expeirnce for a long time.

Johnson
(late innings of first game)
We had to dismiss that one so quick. It kept going back and forth so quick, I could hardly keep up with it. It was tense and there were a lot of special moments for all the athletes out there. Southern had quite a few guys who clutched up and made some big plays and of course we did too. I was glad we werethe home team becuase it looked like whoever had the last at bat was going to win and we were fortunate to be the home team.It was a very emotional game and everyone was reaching way down deep to pull up their part and be accountalbeto their best effort.

Keith gets up there with two stikres and just flares at one. It wasn’t one of his best swings, but he puts it in play and if you put it in play long enough good things happen. They just refused to strikeout in that situation.
It was really fun and more than anything else, it addresses the character of this team and the joy that it brings to me watching them.

Ole Miss
Mike Bianco
I’m very proud to win our third regional and be headed to a super regional for the third year in a row. Oppostie of last night’s game where it was all about Lance Lynn and pitching. Certainly we left a lot of runners on base.
Today we didn’t and today we needed them. Today offensively, we were really, really good and we needed that. Hats off to a very good Sam Houston team but a tough team. A team taht just competed their hearts out and to score double digit runs day three back to back shows you what a great job Mark Johnson has done there. I’m so proud of our guys to put us in that situation. I don’t think many people thought that we would be sitting here getting ready to play in a super regiuonal weekend. This team has done some amazing things this year.It hasn’t always been pretty but to get to this point and be two wins away form the college world series shows you what a special bunch this is.

OM SS Zack Cozart
(on return to super regional)
We all thought we had a team,if we just put it all together like we did this weekend would be tough to beat.We wre looking forward to getting to a super regional. We had a lot of confidence even a couple of weeks ago when we were struggling or had a couple of bad losses. We proved some people wrong and we’re excited to go to Tempe or play here.

OM LF Justin Henry
Three weeks ago, I’m sure not many people thought we would be here, but we just took it as if we’re struggling rihgt now but there will be good things to come for us. WE really kept that mindset and guys beleived through some times when a lot of people would have shut it down. I’m really proud of a lot of the guys here and we’re confident and the whole time our goal is to go to Omaha. We were able to keep that through the tough times.

(responding to SHSU 4th inning lead)
They really swung the bat well today. That is the key to the game is answering when teams score. A lot of guys had big days today and a lot of guys were seeing the ball good. It is one of those things where hitting is contagious. If one guy gets a hit, it just blooms from there. It is big to answer when they have a big inning to come right back with a big inning ourselves. I think that really demoralizes the other team.
