Regionals: Some Ramblings, A.P. Style
By Doug Kroll - June 02, 2007
As fellow college baseball writer Aaron Fitt from Baseball America, and our very own Going Yard guys, Evan Markfield and Matt Meyers watched some college baseball from the local Coastal Carolina hotspot (as we got discounts and other goodies from the owner), several things crept into our conversation. I'm not at liberty to get into great detail but let's go over some trends of the tourney, some surprises and whatever else. Because as you may know, we're getting slammed by Barry at the moment.
So you want to be on the NCAA Tournament committee? I know I don't, but some of you might want to be. If there are a couple teams that you feel didn't really belong in the field of 64, well, they really didn't! I can't get into specifics, but if you have a team in mind and want to email me or comment, I might be able to say yes or no. Let's just say someone got some 'help.'
Anyway, onto the stuff that matters, the games. How about Austin Peay??? What a performance last night by A.P.'s Shawn Kelley who went punch for punch with next week's top pick in the draft, David Price. It's not everyday that you see a guy with 10 innings next to his name in the box score, but that's what Kelley did. It's also not everyday that Price strikes out 17 and comes out with a no-decision, thanks to a Tyler Farrar homerun in the top of the ninth that broke the shutout. So what have the Governors done for an encore? Gone out and wiped the floor with a Memphis team that hasn't looked like a team that should be thankful of making the tourney. Austin Peay put up six in the top of the first, and at this point, haven't looked back.
How about Troy? They get what many people felt was a gift invitation from the tournament committee, and how do they follow it up? They get rocked in their first game, and then lose 5-4 to Sam Houston State. At least the Trojans were able to witness the atmosphere of Swayze Field in Oxford. But then again, they didn't get a chance to see the Rebels on the field.
There's so much going on at the moment, it's tough to touch on everything, but Miami's in some trouble. That postseason Jim Morris magic may be running dry. After a real rough loss against Louisville yesterday, the 'Canes followed it up with an 8-1 lead on Kent State as they went to the bottom of the 8th. Then all heck broke loose. A six spot in the 8th made it an 8-7 game, followed by a leadoff double by KSU in the bottom of the 9th. Somehow Danny Gil got out of it and Miami lives to see another day in Columbia.
San Diego last night. All I can say is Fresno State is not your ordinary No. 4 seed. They could have easily been considered a very good 3 seed, but thanks to a low RPI because of the WAC, they were put in as a 4 to face the 8 national seed. And they showed that they are as good as some people have felt. The Toreros have a predicament though, but I think the answer is an obvious one. Do they throw ace Brian Matusz tonight against Minnesota? I think it's a no-brainer that Rich Hill has to. Let's say they go and lose to the Gophers tonight (which can easily happen with or without Matusz on the mound), then how can you sit there and justify not throwing the guy with the second most strikeouts in the nation? If you have a differing opinion, please, let me know.
Everything else has been relatively standard. I think UC-Irvine-Texas is the game of the tournament so far. And if Clemson-Coastal Carolina can ever get the flooding rains out of Myrtle Beach, that's got the makings of an instant classic itself, even if we do play on Wednesday.
Please feel free to email me at dkroll@cstv.com or leave a comment with any questions. I've got nothing to do really for the next couple of days most likely except sit here in Starbucks and drink some latte's. I actually had some people say to me,"well at least with no games you can go to the beach or play golf." I won't even comment on that one, you guys can figure it out for yourself. Enjoy the rest of the action today. I'll be back later with some more rambling.
