Round Rock: Anteater Mauling

By Glenn Tanner - June 01, 2007

2-seed UC Irvine scored four runs in the first inning and cruised to a 13-0 win over 3-seed Wake Forest.

The win sets Irvine up for a date tomorrow night with the winner of tonight's much-anticipated Brown-Texas game.

Wake gets the loser tomorrow at noon.

The Anteaters pounded out 16 hits against three Wake pitchers and struck out only once. Everything went right for Irvine, as many of their 14 singles were bloopers, infield hits, or seeing-eye balls. Leadoff hitter Taylor Holiday had three of those singles and scored three times. Bryan Peterson also scored three times, and Cody Cipriano and Jeff Cusick each had three ribbies.

Wes Ethridge pitched eight dominant innings to get the win. After Wake loaded the bases in the first, Etheridge didn't allow a runner past second base in the remainder of his eight innings. His final line: 8 innings, 4 hits, 4 walks, and a career-high 10 Ks. His outs were almost all on the ground -- 11 groundouts and only one flyout.
