Round Rock: Anteaters all over Deacons
By Glenn Tanner - June 01, 2007
Whew.
Irvine has announced their presence with authority.
Wes Etheridge worked himself out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first, then his teammates plated four runs in the bottom of the inning. After an inning and a half, the Anteaters lead Wake Forest 4-0.
Update... Irvine has already added two more in the bottom of the second on a Tyler Vaughn double and a two seeing-eye singles. 6-0 'Eaters.
Wake loaded the bases in the first on a single, a walk, and their 108th HBP of the season, but Brett Linnenkohl smashed a hard one just to SS Ben Orloff's left; Orloff gloved it, stepped on second, and threw to first for an easy DP.
Irvine singled Wake starter Garrett Bullock to death in the first. Taylor Holiday led off with an infield single and moved to second on a sec bunt. Cody Cipriano, Matt Morris, Bryan Peterson, and Jeff Cusick smacked consecutive singles to make it 3-0, and only Cusick's was hit hard. Bullock balked home the fourth run of the inning before getting out of it.
Wake threatened again in the top of the second, putting two men on with one out, but Etheridge got another DP to escape.
BTW, here's a great article on Etheridge from the LA Times. Etheridge basically spent his teenage years skipping school and doing drugs, and an eating disorder dropped his weight to 140 before he had a religious experience that motivated him to get his life back on track.
