Round Rock: Crusing right along

By Glenn Tanner - June 02, 2007

After four innings in bright, warm Round Rock, Wake Forest leads Brown 3-1.

It's going very quickly, as the four innings have passed in less than an hour.

The crowd is very small, and many are lurking under the overhang to escape the sun, but with teams facing elimination, the play has been hard and crisp.

Wake scored quickly in the bottom of the first. Ben Terry led off with a single and eventually scored on cleanup hitter Willy Fox's double. It was Fox's first hit since the regular season ended -- he had been 0-14 in the postseason. Allan Dykstra, who had been hit by a pitch, moved to third on Fox's hit and scored on a grounder.

Brown's hitters didn't show a great deal of patience in the second inning, as Wake pitcher Ben Hunter set them down on six pitches, but they broke through in the third.

Robert Papenhause led off with a bad-hop double, and after a K, Steve Daniels beat out a bunt, at least according to the first base umpire. Ryan Murray followed with a weak chopper to the right of first base to score a run, and Murray was safe at first when Hunter brainlocked and failed to cover the base. Hunter did recover by getting Ivy League Player of the Year Devin Thomas to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

Wake nearly got the run back in the third. Evan Ocheltree blasted a one-out triple off the wall, missing a homer by inches. But Wake put on the safety squeeze, and pitcher James Cramphin made an excellent play to toss him out at home.

The sky is a mix of clouds and sun and is very, very bright. Several outfielders have already had trouble locating the ball.

Oh, and it's hotter today.
