Round Rock: Fear the Mighty Anteater
By Glenn Tanner - June 02, 2007
Scott Gorgen and his UC Irvine teammates quieted a huge orange-clad crowd with a 3-1 win over Texas.
The win puts the Anteaters into the regional championship round, needing only one win in two games to advance to the supers.
Irvine will be tough to beat twice. They have shown great pitching, great speed, and great defense. They're just an extremely solid team that doesn't make mistakes. They'll be hard to keep out of Omaha.
Gorgen tossed a five-hitter for his fifth complete game of the season. He didn't blow Texas hitters away, but they simply couldn't hit him hard, and the Irvine defense was flawless behind him. Gorgen struck out only two batters, but recorded 17 outs on the ground. Other than Brad Suttle's homer, only one Texas baserunner reached third base, and only two more reached second.
Speedy Taylor Holiday drove the Anteater offense from his leadoff spot with a double, triple, and two runs scored. Catcher Aaron Lowenstein chipped in two hits and smothered a couple of dirtballs the only time Texas had a runner at third.
Suttle and Nick Peoples each had two hits for Texas. Adrian Alaniz pitched well for 6.2 innings, but took the loss.
Texas will play Wake Forest in an elimination game tomorrow at noon. Irvine will await the winner at 6 p.m.
