Round Rock: Here we go again

By Glenn Tanner - June 04, 2007

The longest seventh-inning stretch in the history of baseball is about to end.

Texas' Jeff Boes popped up to end the top of the 7th at 8:22 p.m. last night. At about 1 p.m., UC Irvine's Taylor Vaughn will lead off the bottom of the 7th with the Anteaters leading 6-5.

(Many people might feel that the Chicago Cubs still hold the record for the stretch during which Ozzy Ozbourne sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," but that lasted only a couple of minutes; it just seemed much longer.)

Mother Nature put on a spectacular light show last night, but she appears to have given her blessing to finish this one off. Temps are in the mid 80's, and we've had some clouds move in from the west recently, but the radar looks clear for now.

Should Texas rally to win this, we'd take an hour break and play another game.

I know I'm not supposed to root, but honestly I'm rooting for a Texas rally because:
1. More baseball is preferable to less, and I'd love to see Irvine play another game, particularly if Wes Etheridge starts again on the hill.
2. This is a 120-mile round trip drive for me, and I'd hate to do that for two innings.

Anyways, Irvine will have 9-1-2 due up in the bottom of the 7th. Texas will have 6-7-8 batting in the top of the 8th, which also insures that NCAA home run leader Kyle Russell will get another swing. Unless Augie gives him the sac bunt sign like he did in the first inning last night.

It looks like rubber-armed Texas reliever Joseph Krebs will continue the relief appearance he began in the sixth last night, but here's a shocker... Irvine ace Scott Gorgen is warming in the Anteater bullpen.
