Round Rock: Texas busts it open late

By Glenn Tanner - June 01, 2007

The final score goes into the record book as Texas 8, Brown 2, but that score won't reflect what a fight this was for the first seven innings.

Brown starter Jeff Dietz pitched his tail off for 7+ innings and left trailing only 4-2, but the bullpen showed why the Bears were riding Deitz so hard, as Texas plated four runs in the eighth.

Nice moment at the end of the game... As Texas and Brown went through the post-game handshake line, most of the 9,000+ in attendance gave the teams a standing ovation.

Brown pulled Dietz after a leadoff single in the 8th, and reliever Rob Hallberg loaded the bases with eight consecutive balls. Chance Wheeless then drove in two with a double, and later, two more runs came in on a wild pitch and a grounder.

Texas finished the night with 16 hits. #9 hitter Travis Tucker went 4-for-4, Nick Peoples had three hits, and Chais Fuller, Chance Wheeless, and Brad Suttle chipped in two hits each.

The Texas bullpen was spectacular, striking out 12 over five innings, including seven in a row at one point. Joseph Krebs got the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief; he allowed only two hits, no walks, and fanned seven. Randy Boone nabbed a save with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, recording Ks on all five of his outs. In fact, Brown's last nine outs of the game all came on strikeouts.

Brown had nine hits in the game. Ryan Murphy, Matt Nuzzo, and Robert Papenhause each had two hits, but the Bears' 3-4 hitters were hitless in eight at-bats.

Texas advances to tomorrow night's winner's bracket game against UC Irvine. Brown will face Wake Forest in an elimination game at noon.

Back in 30 minutes or so with quotes and a wrapup.
