Tallahasse: 'Beautiful baseball'

By Michael McGuffee - June 02, 2007

MSU's Justin Pigott (6-6) pitched what FSU skipper Mike Martin called "beautiful baseball," as the Bulldogs recorded their first shutout victory of the season over a Seminole offense averaging nine runs a game.

Florida State bats were ablaze with a .355 team batting average for the season, but have cooled off significantly of late. The Tribe's batting average over the last five games hovers around .200.

The Seminoles will now return to play Stetson at 1 p.m. tomorrow and will start right hander Ryan Strauss (9-3). Mississippi State will turn to senior Josh Johnson (2-3) who will start against the early-game winner at 7 p.m.

Here's the post game scoop.

Senior center fielder Jeffrey Rea became MSU's new career hits leader with a double that put runners in scoring position and set up the two-run third inning for the Dogs. The said the special ball was in his back pocket after the game.

FSU senior All-American Bryan Henry (14-2) pitched well through eight innings, but gave up two runs in the third, a home run in the eighth and didn't get any help offensively.

Martin also mentioned that Henry tweaked a hamstring in the first inning that bothered throughout the night. Henry, however, would not blame the injury for the loss and Martin gave all credit to the Bulldogs.

Florida State Head Coach
Mike Martin

"I'm trying to remember when I have seen a game better pitched than I saw from (Justin) Pigott and (Aaron) Weatherford. that was just beautiful baseball. they deserved a tremendous amount of credit. That was excellent pitching."

"We know that we have our backs against the wall, but we're not eliminated. Tomorrow we know we are play a very good Stetson club, a very good Stetson club. We have to come out and be ready to go."

"Well I tell you, Bryan (Henry) won't tell you this but he pulled a groin and it just shows what a fighter he is going out there and pitching his heart out. This young man right here is a special person." He wasn't going to come out of the ballgame."

Pitcher Bryan Henry
(On his groin injury)

"I mean it was nothing really big or anything that would have affected the way I threw tonight. It just got kind of aggravated in the first inning and it just bothered me all night but it didn't affect anything. Youve got to credit them for everything they did tonight. I made about four mistakes and they hit every one of them, so that is just the game of baseball."

Mississippi State Head Coach
Ron Polk

"Hey we won; great pitching by Justin (Pigott) and Aaron (Weatherford) against a real good hitting ball club. Florida State, I think they were hitting .355 coming in, so they (his pitchers) had to pitch very well and they did."

"I thought Bryan Henry was very effective after he gave up the two-spot in the third inning. There were strikes, change of speeds, got three or four pitches so it all depends on who got the base hit and we got a couple of good knocks and Russ (Sneed) gets the home run and Jeffrey (Rea) gets a key double that set the record."

Pitcher Justin Pigott

"You know, the first three innings, I felt a little all over the place. Just finally settled down in the fourth and kind of got in a little bit of a rhythm. I'm thankful that some of those balls stayed in the park. That definitely helped. We made some really good plays."
