Tallahassee: Post game reactions
By Michael McGuffee - June 02, 2007
Stetson head coach Pete Dunn was pleased with his team's drastically improved performance from yesterday, while Bethune-Cookman's Mervyl Melendez was once again unable to get his Wildcats over the 0-2 hump in Tallahasee.
Here's what they had to say after the game.
Bethune-Cookman Head Coach
Mervyl Melendez
"I guess we're going home once again 0-2. I don't know, we need to regroup and think about things that we did this year, and we need to improve as a program so that we can at least compete at this level in regional play. We've been two and out way too many times so when we are thinking about the things we need to improve so that we are not in this situation again in the future."
(On Starter Dustin Blackwell)
"Well he was off some but I mean it was more what we didn't do fielding the bunt. I mean if you can't field a bunt at this level then you don't deserve to win any games. So when you get to a regional you have to be able to make those plays and we didn't. We were just very tentative on defense and then after the error you know what happens, here comes the base hit, and that's what happened today."
(On what he told his club after the game)
"Know the feeling, know the feeling of being two and out and you don't want to have this feeling again next year. So you got to work towards a goal of at least trying to be in the championship game in regional play. Of course thank the seniors of their time that they spent here at Bethune-Cookman and wish them the best and hopefully some of them will have a chance to play at the next level."
Catcher Drew Clark
(On Stetson's Corey Kluber)
"Well he just got ahead early with a fastball, got ahead early with a fastball and had a good slider. he just hit the zone, pounded the zone and I jumped on the fastball. I hit the fastball early and last at-bat I hit a slider he left up over the middle of the plate."
Stetson Head Coach
Pete Dunn
"I'm very proud of the way we came out today after our, what I consider a sub-par performance yesterday. We came out aggressively. (Corey) Kluber set the tone for us on the mound and did his job. We came out and put up some pretty good innings and we felt pretty good and we were able to build the lead. Corey (Kluber) was being pretty efficient with his pitching. We are very happy to still be here, still be playing. We look forward to tomorrow and hopefully we will come out aggressively and play well again tomorrow. Hope it's a long day for us."
"I will admit I got on the bus yesterday after we left here and chewed into them a little bit because I didn't think that we really had a very good approach yesterday. Which is hard to believe in the opening round of a regional. I didn't think we had real good focus and I think that internally caused some of our demise yesterday. But they reacted very favorably. They came out more focused today and I was very proud of them."
