Tallahassee: Post game scoop
By Michael McGuffee - June 01, 2007
With a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, only three innings stood between Bethune-Cookman and their first ever win in Tallahassee. But with the crowd rallying behind them the top-seeded Seminoles cranked out five runs in the seventh inning to stun the Wildcats and earn a first round win in the regional.
Florida State will advance tomorrow to the winner's bracket where they and senior ace Bryan Henry (14-1) will face Mississippi State at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs defeated Stetson earlier today by a score of 6-3.
The Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman will pitch Dustin Blackwell (8-5) as they'll take on the Hatters of Stetson for the right to earn a third-game opportunity in the regional.
After the game B-CU head coach Mervyl Melendez praised his starter for keeping the Seminoles scoreless for the first six innings and rightfully so.
"I think that Francisco (Rodriguez) did an excellent job, excellent, excellent job tonight. We couldn't ask for more from him. We just needed the bullpen to step up tonight and they didn't."
"It was a heck of a ballgame," FSU head coach Mike Martin said. "I'm very, very impressed with Rodriguez. I thought he kept us off balance as well as anybody. Their whole team was very impressive, but that is what you expect when you get to his point in the season."
After mustering six hits and two runs in the first three innings, the Tribe held B-CU to just one hit and one walk for the remainder of the game.
"A lot of things impressed me about our club. One was Michael's (Hyde) perseverance. He just continued to battle when things weren't going exactly right for his team offensively and he kept his team in the game and gave us a chance."
A chance was all they needed as Mark Hallberg connected with a fastball for an RBI double to give the Seminoles their first lead of the game with two out in the seventh. Catcher Buster Posey provided the explanation point on the next at-bat, jacking a two-run homer way, way over the left-field fence. One of the longest home runs I've ever seen in person.
"It felt pretty good," Posey said of the big swing, an obvious understatement. "That's what I love about this time of year, playoff baseball. You can feel it not only in the stands, but with the team as well. I was pleased to come up with the big hit."
"I guess we are, bottom line, 0-7 in Tallahassee," Melendez said of the loss. "We can't seem to pull it off for some reason. You got to give them a lot of credit; those hitters were patient enough knowing that sooner or later they were going to get some pitches they could handle."
