Tallahassee: Standing 'O'

By Michael McGuffee - June 03, 2007

The Hatters finally stopped the bleeding in an inning that was hard to watch from the press box and I can't even imagine how Stetson fans could stomach the debacle.

11 runs, 7 hits -- 5 singles, 1 double, and 1 three-run home run -- 5 walks, 2 batters hit.

The Seminoles received a standing ovation after the inning from a happy crowd who can rest assured Florida State will live to play another game in the home regional.

Here's how it went down -- I'll help you keep count.

It all started when reliever Justin Dechert walked center fielder Mark Gildea, who then stole second on the next pitch. Brandon Reichert then singled up the middle on the next pitch to score Gildea (1).

With Reichert on first, Tony Thomas Jr. singled through the left side, and Mark Hallberg followed with a single to center to load the bases with FSU's third straight hit.

A pitching change followed, but freshman Blake Marsocci walked Buster Posey on a full count to score another (2), and he was replaced after one batter and six pitches.

Freshman left hander Ian Thompson was the next victim, giving up a sacrifice fly for another run (3), and then a giant three-run homer to designated hitter Dennis Guinn (6). At least it cleared the bases...

Thompson 'regrouped' to hit the next batter and walk the one after that, before finally getting Gildea to fly out to center for the second out of the inning.

However, Reichert would keep the rally going with a two RBI double to right center (8). Thomas would single, again, to left field. Hallberg walked on a full count and Posey singled to right for another score(9).

Tommy Oravetz was then hit by a pitch for another RBI (10), and Guinn walked to score Hallberg for the 11th and final run of the seventh. Stidham grounded out to first to put an end to the Hatter heartbreak.
