Tempe: Devils rally to shock Rebels.
By Glenn Tanner - June 10, 2007
Will Kline pitched the game of his life and shut down the biggest bats in the NCAA for eight innings.
Unfortunately for him, he couldn't go nine.
The third-ranked Sun Devils, who entered the game batting .351 as a team and averaging 9.7 runs per game, were held scoreless for the first seven innings, but rallied for three runs in the ninth to shock Ole Miss 4-3.
Brett Wallace delivered the game-winner on a two-out single to center.
Ole Miss took the lead in the 3rd. 9-hole hitter Alex Kliman led off with a double into the right-center gap. Jordan Henry tried to bunt him to third, but got into an 0-2 hole, then beat out a high bouncer to first when the pitcher was late to cover. Zach Miller immediately followed with a single up the middle for the game's first run. The extremely promising inning ended quickly, however, thanks to a fielder's choice on a sac bunt attempt and a 1-6-3 double play.
Kline didn't allow a hit until two out in the fourth and stranded that runner with his fifth strikeout of the night.
Meanwhile, the Rebels had eight hits through five innings against ASU starter Mike Leake. But Leake really helped himself out by starting two 1-6-3 double plays and also got a strikeout to strand two more in the fourth.
The Devils did show some life in the bottom of the fifth, but may have been kept off the board by their own version of Steve Bartman. Matt Spencer led off with a single, and an out later CJ Retherford smacked a double over the third base bag. Spencer may have been able to score on the play, but someone in the overflow crowd hanging over the fence down the line touched the ball, forcing Spencer to stop at third on the ground rule double. Kline was rattled, and his next pitch hit the backstop on the fly but bounced back so hard that Spencer couldn't score. After a mound visit by coach Mike Bianco, Kline regrouped and got a short flyout for the second out, then got Brett Wallace to bounce weakly to third to end the inning.
After the inning, an ASU security guard cleared fans away from the fence.
In the top of the sixth, Ole Miss used their ninth and tenth hits of the night to put runners at the corners with one out, but Leake again got himself out of trouble with his third 1-6-3 double play of the night.
In the bottom of the sixth, we nearly had a brawl. Eric Sogard led off with a bunt single, and an out later Kiel Roling bounced one past third. Sogard went to third, but Roling was caught in a rundown after rounding first too far. Sogard correctly broke for home, and Ole Miss turned their attention to him as Roling rounded second and headed to third. Sogard was finally put out on what looked like an unnecessarily hard tag by catcher Alex Kliman and tempers flared. Lots of screaming ensured, and I saw something I've never seen...
On-deck hitter Ike Davis, bat in hand, was walking towards the plate jawing with Kliman. Ole Miss first baseman Evan Button ran up behind Davis and pulled the bat out of his hand. Meanwhile, the two head coaches were squared off yelling at each other, with a couple of the umpires holding Pat Murphy back.
Everyone finally got herded back to their dugouts and positions, and after a full-blown 6-man conference between the head coaches and the umpires, all was declared was well and no one ejected. Davis anticlimactically grounded out to end the inning.
Leake's luck finally ran dry in the seventh. Singles by Justin Henry (his third infield single of the game) and Zach Miller put two on with one out. CF Matt Spencer saved Leake by making a great running catch on the warning track in the left-center alley for the second out, but Zack Cozart poked a 2-RBI single to center to make it 3-0.
ASU finally broke up the shutout on Eric Sogard's solo home run in the 8th, and mounted its rally in the ninth. Ike Davis led off with a single, then Matt Spencer bounced one down the first base line that went for a single. Tim Smith followed with another single to load the bases, then the Devils made it 3-2 on a ground out. Murphy, who had already used three pinch-runners in the inning, sent freshman closer Jason Jarvis to the plate to pinch hit for leadoff hitter Andrew Romine. Jarvis, with only 15 at-bats on the year, fell behind 0-2, then delivered a game-tying sac fly to right.
Up next came Pac-10 Player of the Year Brett Wallace, who stroked a 1-0 pitch to center for the game-winner.
Leake pitched seven innings, allowed 13 hits (12 singles and a double), three earned runs, no walks, hit two, and struck out five.
Brian Flores pitched two hitless innings to earn the win.
Kline allowed 11 hits, four earned runs, two walks, and struck out seven.
Eight Ole Miss starters had hits tonight, led by three hits each from Jordan Henry and Cozart.
Sogard, Roling, Spencer, and Retherford had two hits each for ASU.

wow! what an amazing super regional baseball game. You are able to see why arizona state is never out of any ball game cause of the depth of hitting in their lineup. I think Ole Miss sent a wake-up call to arizona state by coming out and holding the sundevils to 0 runs in seven innings.

That was an exciting 9th inning if you are a Sun Devils fan! I could not believe Ole Miss did not make a pitching change. Cost them the game.

The reason Ole Miss didn't make a pitching change is that Satterwhite and Bittle have blown a large number of games, so Bianco probably thought it was safer just to go with Kline and see what happened. And after watching Ole Miss about a half-dozen times this year, I think it was the right call, it just didn't work out.
