NCAA: Scottie, Scottie

UC Irvine's Scott Gorgen has joined Team USA, replacing guys like Brian Matusz who will head home to rest their arms, and got off to quite a start on Monday. In his first start, Gorgen struck out eight and scattered three hits in 4 2-3 scoreless innings as Team USA blanked Russia 6-0 in Cary, North Carolina.

It's good to see Gorgen succeed with the Americans, because he was really one of the more likeable guys, as were nearly all of the Anteaters, at the College World Series. It was against Russia, but still impressive nonetheless.

Here's the Americans upcoming schedule:

The team closes out the summer schedule at the World Port Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands starting on August 2 against Japan. The team will play eight games (two each) against Chinese Taipei, Japan, the Netherlands and Cuba prior to a one-game championship game featuring the two teams with the best records.

And just a sidenote, the quartet of teams in the tournament are different than the ones played previously.

Might as well take a look at who's done what with this squad, which just went 6-2 on its final American road trip, and is 21-8 after winning a silver medal at the Pan American Games in Brazil. Here's the leaderboard:

Batting Average:
San Diego's Josh Romanski has hit .385 but only in 39 At-Bats
Vanderbilt's Pedro Alvarez is hitting .340 to lead all everyday players
Arizona State's Brett Wallace is at .337

Homeruns:
Texas Tech's Roger Kieschnick has six
Alvarez has four
South Carolina's Justin Smoak has three

ERA: (More than one appearance)
Pepperdine's Brett Hunter has a 0.44 ERA in 20 2-3 innings
Cal's Tyson Ross has a 0.91 ERA in 29 2-3 innings
Vanderbilt's Mike Minor has a 1.08 ERA in 25 innings

It shouldn't be surprising what Alvarez or Wallace have done. Those should be the two favorites for next season's player of the year award. I'm sure they are having a great time, but they've been playing baseball since February! I'm sure they can't wait to get home from the Netherlands with a few wins.
