NCAA: Ducking Out
By Doug Kroll - August 14, 2007
Oregon may not have any players, a coaching staff, or even a place to play, but the OU is causing a stir in the college baseball world. After announcing that the program is returning in 2009, the Ducks have been on the search for a new head coach. Here's the latest on that news.
Oregon has denied that they offered the job to the head coach of its arch-rival, Oregon State's Pat Casey. But Casey is the hottest commodity in college baseball, considering he's won back-to-back national titles and been to Omaha the last three seasons. Many insiders say it happened, but OU has denied it repeatedly, after a story surfaced in The Oregonian that they had.
It wouldn't surprise me if they had, even if it was to check the waters. But Casey's not going anywhere, especially after turning down the Notre Dame job after his first national championship.
Other hot names that have surfaced: Vanderbilt's Tim Corbin and UC Irvine's Dave Serrano. Oregon has flown to see the Commodores' skipper in Nashivlle, and is considered the leading candidate for the job.
But why would Corbin leave what has been his creation? Some coaches will tell you it's their dream to literally build a program up from nothing. In some ways, Corbin has done that in Nashville. He's made them not only relevant, but a powerhouse in the SEC and in the nation, spending nearly the whole 2007 season at the No. 1 spot.
Corbin also doesn't have any noticeable ties to Oregon, let alone the West Coast. But who knows. There have been crazier moves, but I think a lot of people would be shocked if Corbin is the guy for the Ducks job. There's no question he'd do a great job, but just thinking about the lack of scholarships that the school will have for the baseball team in the first couple of years, it will make it awfully tough to compete at first in the very tough Pac-10.
My gut is telling me Serrano, not Corbin. Only time will tell. From the sound of it, it won't be too long until we know.

I can't see Tim Corbin. either.
I would be surprised if Larry Casian, an assistant coach at U. of Portland, didn't apply for the job. A dark horse would be Rob Vance of Concordia-Portland, who has proven that he can recruit in this territory.
