NCAA: In The News

By Doug Kroll - August 09, 2007

Despite it being the dog days of August, there is still enough news to make a blog post in the world of college baseball, with most of it having to do with coaches but also a sad note out of Philadelphia.

The biggest news of the week comes from down in Louisville where the Cardinals have locked up head coach Dan McDonnell for the next seven seasons, with a nice long-term contract. Many schools came calling after he guided the Cards to a school record 47 wins, and the school's first College World Series appearance. They even won a game in Omaha.

Athletic Director Tom Jurich said that he tore up McDonnell's original contract which still had four years remaining on it, to lock up his head man long-term.

This is a great move by Jurich, who did a great job by bringing in McDonnell from Ole Miss where he was an assistant. The move paid benefits after just one year, as in his first year, McDonnell was able to prove that by playing in the Big East, teams can still win on the national level.

Now to the sad news. Temple is mourning the loss of sophomore Richie Gargel who passed away this week after suffering an accident while swimming. He appeared in 20 games in 2007 while striking out 27 batters in 30 innings. Gargel was playing this summer for the St. Cloud River Bats where hehad a 1-0 record in 8.1 innings of work.

Meanwhile, Kansas State made a nice hire, bringing in Lane Burroughs as an assistant after spending nine years at Southern Miss.

More news next week.

One thing that going to be interesting to watch on the coaching front is who gets hired for the new U. of Oregon program.

One possible candidate has already been eliminated. Pat Bailey, a very successful coach at D-III George Fox, was hired as an assistant coach at Oregon State.
