NCAA: Not His Place

Just a quick update on Dave Serrano. The O.C. Register is reporting that UC Irvine's head coach will stay with the Anteaters, and decline Oregon's offer to become the head coach of the ressurected program.
While Serrano will be turning down a truckload full of money, it's tough to blame him, as he's made a real connection in Irvine, turning a program that was literally nothing only a few years ago, into a CWS team. Serrano wants to stay and make them a perrenial winner, which is something that is very admirable.
With Oregon receiving a $100 million check from Nike founder Phil Knight, the new head coach of the Ducks, whoever that ends up being, will have a very hefty paycheck. The thing about it is, he'll certainly earn it.
A new stadium needs to be built, the first recruiting class needs to be brought in, jerseys need to be figured out, a staff needs to be put together. Just think of every aspect that a college baseball program has, and that guy will be in charge of starting it.
Good thing they have that money.
Time is certainly ticking though, considering Cal State Bakersfield hired its new head coach, Bill Kernen, what seems like a long, long time ago (May 17) to get their program up and running in the same year Oregon's will return in 2009. Oregon's new head coach will certainly be behind.
