NCAA: Schedule Makers Beware

By Doug Kroll - August 29, 2007

The first schedules for the 2007-08 season began appearing a couple of weeks ago, and it took until now for me to find some glaring differences between past versions and this year's. The culprit? Auburn. In case you forgot, the standard start date will be about a month later than normal, and this will force teams to play more midweek games, which will take a toll on some pitching staffs, no question.

The Tigers will kick the season off like everyone else on Friday, February 22, against East Tennessee State, but it will be a four-game series that extends to Monday. This isn't the only four game set on their slate. Thursday, February 28 and Friday, February 29, Auburn will host Florida State. And then the two will travel to Tallahassee for the other two games of the series on Saturday and Sunday.

It doesn't stop there. The Tiger boys get March 3 off, before facing Davidson for two mid-week games the 4th and 5th. Then comes pesky VMI, who gave Auburn fits a year ago, for another, yep you guessed it, four game series. That starts on the 6th of March.

That is a ton of games in a short period, that is sure to take a toll on some of the arms, especially early in the season. But games have to be played, which leaves not too much choice of when to play them.

For you math majors out there, Auburn will play nine out of 10 days starting on February 28. And I hope Auburn baseball fans are ready for baseball in March. The Tigers will play 22 of the 31 days of the month, including six straight days starting on the fourth.

It will be interesting to hear how coaches dealt with the new start date and how they feel it will have an effect on their staffs. I have a feeling it won't be a great thing for people into comparing numbers. That will be a column as we get closer to the season, and it will be interesting to see if others turn to the four game series, instead of the traditional three-gamers.

At the moment, it looks like there will be lots of college baseball nearly every night of the week, which will be different. It almost looks more like a MLB team's schedule.

When is the hockey season going to be altered to favor southern teams? That's great, let's alter baseball to try and get Ohio State and Notre Dame to Omaha every year. When are the Horns and Devils going to be in the Frozen Four? I want steps taken NOW to fix THIS problem. Or are we going to have to fight the Civil War again to get this fixed?
