NCAA: So Cliche
By Doug Kroll - August 15, 2007
Get ready for some really cliche headlines across the nation's newspapers on Thursday. That's becasue No. 1 pick David Price has signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The AP is reporting Tampa will give Price a six year deal worth $11.25 million. The former Vandy star gets a $5.6 million signing bonus and is guaranteed $8.5 million as part of the deal.
In other news, the Seattle Mariners and right-hander Phillippe Aumont, the 11th overall selection, agreed Wednesday to a contract with a $1.9 million signing bonus. Aumont, considered by some to be the next Eric Gagne (in his prime), was set to head to Junior College if he hadn't reached a deal.
Of course Price's signing affects Vanderbilt in 2008, but let's be serious. Head coach Tim Corbin didn't expect him back. If he hadn't signed by midnight Wednesday, that just would have been icing on the cake for a team that is going to be absolutley stacked anyway.
I'll have a full column out on Thursday afternoon that will detail which college teams were the winners and losers on guys either coming back, or coming to school.
