Serrano Not A Traitor

By Doug Kroll - September 11, 2007

The venom has been spewing from many in Southern California since Dave Serrano decided to leave UC Irvine and head to conference rival Cal State Fullerton after saying he wasn't going anywhere when approached about the Oregon job. But how much can you blame him?

He's going back to the program where he really made a name for himself, as an assistant with best friend George Horton. Fullerton has the name that every coach craves when going out to recruit. It has the better facilities. It has a permanant Athletic Director. And maybe most of all, it has real good money.

A report in the Daily Pilot , says that Serrano will earn many more pennies thanks to lucrative shoe and apparel sponsorship contracts.

Serrano has told his players at Irvine not to follow him to Fullerton, after a tearful goodbye in which both coach and players "cried like babies."

As for who's going to take over for Serrano at Irvine, that's yet to be seen. Rumor has it that former Tennessee head coach, Rod Delmonico, has asked about the position. Delmonico was fired from his job after a disappointing season with the Vols, his 18th with the school.

Another name is Anteater assistant Sergio Brown. If Brown doesn't get the job, he's likely to leave to join Serrano at Fullerton.

One thing's for sure, all of a sudden that UC Irvine-Fullerton series April 4-6 has a whole new added dimension to it.
