Horton Nabs First Commit
By Doug Kroll - October 06, 2007
It didn't take long for Oregon's new head coach to nab his first commitment as the Ducks look to build a team for the beginning of the 2009 season.
According to The Oregonian, senior Darrell Hunter is believed to be the first recruit for Horton and the Ducks, after offering him a 35 percent scholarship. If we remember correctly back to when Oregon first decided to bring back baseball, they will be handcuffed a bit by the lack of scholarships the first few seasons.
What makes this story even bigger is who Hunter turned down to orally commit to the Ducks. Yup, you guessed it. Hunter said no to the two-time defending national champs, as he declined what is believed to be a 25 percent scholarship offer from Pat Casey and the Oregon State Beavers.
Hunter is from Thurston High School who pitched for Churchill in the 2007 Class 5A championship game, and was a 2007 Class 5A all-state selection.
The early signing period for baseball begins November 17th, so until then, coach Horton can't comment on any recruits.
But it's evident, the recruiting wars in the Pacific Northwest are already well underway.
