Yanks In Blacksburg

By Doug Kroll - October 25, 2007

Usually when we see exhibition games between a Major League Baseball team and a college team, it is the college kids travelling to the spring training sites in Florida or Arizona. But on March 18, 2008, that won't be the case. The New York Yankees will take a break from their monotonous spring in Tampa, and travel north to Blacksburg, Va. for an exhibition game against the Virginia Tech Hokies.

If you remember back to that awful day in April, and the weeks that followed, the Yankees were really shaken by the whole tragedy. So much so, the Yanks made a $1 million contribution to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund and announced that they would visit the Hokies as a way to aid in the healing process of April 16th.

I don't like to reveal my true colors, but I will say that I have never been a fan of the team from the Bronx, but they certainly will go up a notch on my ladder with this move.

This is about as classy as it gets. Now, one would have to think that Derek Jeter, Johnny Damon, and Hideki Matsui have to make the trip. It loses its value if they bring 40 guys that are destined to end up in Scranton on Opening Day.

Of course I didn't mention the three big name free agents, A-Rod, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera, but if they all return to wear the pinstripes, it would make that day even more special than already planned.

The game is scheduled for a 3pm start at English Field, and I'm sure there will be plenty of festivities surrounding it. I'll have more details as they come out as we get closer.

A lesson to you Yankee Bashers: We are the best and always will be! Great blog Doug now if only your college baseball knowledge helped you actually root for a good MLB team.
