Wallace Award Watch List
By Doug Kroll - December 11, 2007
We know we're getting close to the start of the season when the Wallace Award Watch List is announced, and luckily for all of us baseball fans, that was the case. Now we're just under two months from the first pitch of the regular season. Here's some analysis of the list.
I'm not going to sit here and pick through the over 200 names that the College Baseball Foundation put out on this list, but obviously there are some favorites to win. Of course, last season it was Vanderbilt's David Price who took home the hardware, and this year I would put his former teammate 3B Pedro Alvarez right at the top of this list, as the odds are pretty good we'll see a repeat Commodore win. But obviously, there's a reason for having over 200 names, so let's get to some other guys.
I think Cal is going to surprise some people in the Pac-10 this year, and just to show you what type of talent they've got, they had three players named to the list for the first time. Obviously it doesn't mean much, but it certainly helps someone's case when they are trying to say how good a team is going to be. Fullerton transfer David Cooper was real good last season for the Bears, and after an impressive summer, look for another strong year.
To no one's surprise, Arizona State fields five players on this list, the most from any one team. Reliever Jason Jarvis, starter Mike Leake, catcher Petey Paramore, starter Josh Satow and of course first baseman Brett Wallace all are on it. With all of these guys plus some other role players, expect to see ASU as the favorite to not only make it to Omaha, but win the whole thing.
As for teams with four players, there are a few. Vanderbilt, Miami and North Carolina fall into that category. Even though Vandy lost David Price, between the aforementioned Alvarez, Dominic de la Osa, Mike Minor and Ryan Flaherty, a second straight 'Dore to win the award is obviously not out of the question.
Miami is an interesting story, after coming into last season with such lofty expectations, and with Yonder Alonso, Jemile Weeks, Eric Erickson and Mark Sobolewski back in 2008, those expectations will be high again.
Some of the interesting names as far as "teams you wouldn't expect more than one guy from":
Appalachian State- 3
Boston College- 3
Southern Illinois- 3
Virginia Tech - 2
Brown- 2
Delaware- 2
George Mason- 2
With over 200 names on a preseason list, of course this is bound to happen. But as our buddy Brian over at Big Ten Hardball points out, there are definitely some names missing off of Big Ten rosters, including some names from Michigan.
But after all, it's on a preseason list, and now we can all dream of Jean-Michel Rochon-Salvas of Georgia State winning the Wallace Award when we're in Omaha this summer. He is Canadian and hit .341 last season, in case you're wondering.
