Wichita: How Sweet It Is for UC Irvine

Dave Serrano wanted everyone to enjoy this moment. Everyone.

The UC Irvine coach came into the press conference with not only four of his players, but with all of his assistant coaches, trainers and staff, making the room crowded, but full of smiles from a bunch of happy Anteaters.

Wichita: The Agony of Defeat

When you go down the tunnel to the media entrance for the press conference, only a curtain seperates a hallway that the media walk through and the Wichita State locker room. With the curtain open, you could see some very pained faces on the looks of the Wichita State Shockers.

Wichita: How This Game Was Won

Right now I'm standing (and sweating) in the WSU press box. The interviews are finally finished, the Anteaters have finally made their way back into their clubhouse, and it's time to tell the story of how UC Irvine claimed its first trip to Omaha.

Wichita: Omaha, Meet the Anteaters

For those of you who don't know the UC Irvine Anteaters, you'll be able to learn all about them at Rosenblatt Stadium.

Bryan Petersen delivered a double that bounced off the wall in right center, sending Anteaters leaping out of the dugout to greet Matt Morris at home, and ending the season for Wichita State. In dramatic fashion, UC Irvine wins 3-2, taking the Super Regional 2-0 and advancing to the 2007 College World Series.

Of course, our coverage is far from done here in Omaha. We'll get quotes, reactions, and a final wrapup here from Eck Stadium. Once again, Irvine can rejoice, as their beloved Anteaters will taste Omaha for the very first time.

Wichita: Tomorrow is Proving Day

The message from both teams during the post-game press conference was the same. It was a great pitcher's duel, the ball bounced UC Irvine's way, and tomorrow was going to be the day to prove something to the fans, as well as a nationwide audience.

Wichita: Round One to UC Irvine

If you wanted a low-scoring, pitcher's duel, this was your game...

UCI.....000...000...010....1..7..0
WSU..000...000...000....0..8..0

Irvine manages to score the only run of the game on a two-out, bases loaded grounder that Shocker pitcher Noah Krol couldn't handle, allowing Cody Cipriano to score from third. Wichita sent the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Tyler Hill popped a foul ball to third, stranding Josh Workman at first and sending an Eck Stadium record crowd of 8,153 back home disappointed.

Meanwhile, it was another outstanding performance from Anteater P Scott Gorgen, who proved he's the real deal with his second straight complete game.

WP - Gorgan (12-2)
LP - Womack (3-2)

We'll be back with quotes, analysis, and a wrapup of today's action here in Wichita.
