Chapel Hill: Cavaliers Win Series With Chance to Sweep
The Cavaliers take game 2, and the series, 9-6. Casey Lambert came on in the 9th and struck out three to preserve the victory. Virginia will go back to Charlottesville happy, especially if they can take game 3, which starts in 30 minutes. Other obligations prevent me from staying for the final game.
UNC basketball coach Roy Williams appeared at today's game, as he frequently does when the Tar Heels aren't playing out of town. As usual, he was inundated by autograph seekers.
The score is now 9-5 in favor of the Cavaliers going into the bottom of the 8th. UVA added 2 runs in the 7th on a double by Beau Seabury and an RBI single by Patrick Wingfield, who later scored on a throwing error by SS Josh Horton.
Carolina threatened in the bottom of the inning with singles by Tim Federowicz, Dustin Ackley (now 8 for 8), and Seth Williams. P Andrew Carraway rallied to strike out Drew Poulk on a called third strike and then got pinch hitter Tim Fedroff to ground out to end the inning.
UVA has erupted for 4 runs in the top of the 6th, including a 2 run single by Sean Doolittle. UNC has now used 5 pitchers this inning. Rob Catapano replaced starter Alex White and lasted for 1 batter, Rob Wooten for 2, and Brian Moran for 1 hitter before being lifted for Matt Danford. We head to the bottom of the 6th with UVA up 7-5.
On the strength of a Tim Federowicz double and Dustin Ackley single in the 5th, UNC has taken a 5-3 lead. Ackley is now 7-7 for the series (plus 2 walks). Sean Doolittle has been lifted for Andrew Carraway after giving up 5 runs and 9 hits in 4 plus innings. Freshman Alex White is still going for the Tar Heels.
Chad Flack seems to be breaking out of his slump for UNC, since he singled in the first and delivered a 2 run double in the 2nd to tie the game at 3-3. He had gone 0-15 since hitting an 8th inning HR against Miami last Sunday.
I see Baseball America's Aaron Fitt and former BA writer Will Kimmey in the crowd. I think I'll be like nearly everyone else and go ask them what it will take for Team X to crack the Top 25 or in what round Player X will be drafted.
Chapel Hill: Cavs Draw First Blood; Ackley Still Sizzling
UVA leads 3-1 in the middle of the second inning.
The Cavs scored 2 in the first when Sean Doolittle doubled off the right field wall to score Greg Miclat, who had singled. Brandon Guyer had a 2 out single to drive in Doolittle.
UNC answered with a run in the bottom of the first when Dustin Ackley (now 5 for 5 in the series) singled with the bases loaded and 1 out to score Reid Fronk, who had singled. The inning ended on a fine diving catch by Brandon Marsh in RF with the bases loaded.
UVA has added 1 in the second with a double by Tim Henry and an RBI single by Greg Miclat.
Although the temperature is in the mid-40s, it's a clear, sunny day in Chapel Hill. They are about to crank up games 2 and 3 of the UVA/UNC series with a doubleheader scheduled for today. UVA won last night's game 7-2 in 11 innings. That game lasted nearly 4 hours. Sean Doolittle goes for the Cavaliers and Alex White for the Tar Heels.
UVA scores 5 runs on 5 hits in the 11th to take a commanding 7-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 11th. Closer Casey Lambert has come on to finish it for UVA. I should have brought a blanket, because it's really getting cold now.
UNC outfielders have misplayed 2 routine fly balls into hits, and the Cavaliers have broken open the game with 4 runs in the top of the 11th. One runner on second, no outs. The same defensive struggles that cost UNC a national championship last year may cost them again tonight.
UVA reliever Jake Rule walked 3 straight batters in the bottom of the 10th, but after falling behind pinch hitter Mike Cavasinni 3-0, got a fielder's choice to end the inning and send the game into the 11th. Cavasinni, 1 for 12 on the season, hit for Drew Poulk, who leads the Tar Heels in home runs.
We're heading to the 10th here. CF Tim Henry made a beautiful diving catch on the warning track to steal an extra base hit from Reid Fronk in the bottom of the ninth. The sun, along with the temperature, has begun to drop so hopefully this won't go too many innings.
Tim Federowicz tossed off the catcher's gear to take the mound for UNC in the ninth, striking out 2 of the 3 batters he faced. Carolina is now batting with the score tied in the bottom of the ninth. A bit south of here, it looks like LSU held on to beat South Carolina 6-5.
UNC has now used 4 pitchers, as Rob Wooten was lifted after 2 batters and Brian Moran after 1 batter. Virginia did much the same, as reliever Alex Smith was taken out in the bottom of the 8th after walking Josh Horton, the only batter he faced. Jake Rule is now on the mound for the Wahoos, and UNC has just tied the game at 2-2 with a two out single by freshman Tim Fedroff.
Despite giving up only 4 hits in 6 2/3 innings, Robert Woodard was lifted for Rob Wooten with 2 on and 2 out in the 7th. Greg Miclat promptly delivered a double to put UVA up 2-1 going into the seventh inning stretch.
Excuse my misspelling of "duel" in the previous post- that was one of Eric Sorenson's pet peeves he mentioned in a recent column.
Dustin Ackley's RBI single for UNC ties the score at 1-1 after 4 innings. DH Tim Fedroff was called out on a third strike that looked to be high and inside, drawing the ire of the Tar Heel fans, as well as Coach Mike Fox.
Although Robert Woodard has retired 10 of the last 11 Virginia batters, his own batters have failed to score a run for him and UVA remains on top, 1-0. Jacob Thompson has scattered 3 singles in a bid to go 6-0 for the Cavaliers. Hopefully the falling drops of water from the overhang of Boshamer Stadium won't destroy my laptop and prevent further updates.
UVA goes up 1-0 after 1 inning when 2B David Adams gets a two-out double to score Brandon Marsh. It was actually a routine fly ball that LF Reid Fronk and CF Drew Poulk allowed to drop between them. Adams then made a nice defensive play in the bottom of the first to rob Chad Flack of a hit when he made a diving catch of a screaming line drive.
Sunny but windy day for game one of UNC and UVA (yesterday's game was rained out). The St. Patrick's Day give away of green UNC caps has ensured a good crowd- that plus the fact the UNC men's basketball game isn't until tonight. Jacob Thompson (5-0) goes for UVa and Robert Woodard (4-0, 27-3 career) hurls for the Tar Heels.
