Houston: Rice takes Silver Glove (again)

After pounding out 15 hits in yesterday's eight-inning game, Rice added another 16 hits en route to an 11-6 win today. With the victory, the Owls regain sole possession of first place in Conference USA and win the Silver Glove Series for the seventh consecutive year.

Houston: Rice adds two more insurance runs

Well, this rubber game was interesting for six innings, at least.

Houston: Rice lead back to four runs

Chris Wright looked pretty good for the first two innings he pitched, allowing one run (a homer to Travis Reagan) on two hits. But Rayner Noble probably left him in one batter too long, as Jess Buenger crushed the first pitch he saw for a double into deep right-center.

Houston: Cougars chase Bramhall

Bobby Bramhall also had less than his best stuff for the Owls, struggling to find the plate in one-and-a-third innings in relief of Joe Savery.

Houston: Graham goes to bullpen

Joe Savery just didn't have his best stuff on the mound today, and Wayne Graham responded by going to the bullpen when Savery issued a four-pitch walk to Dustin Kingsbury with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Houston: Flores unlucky, out of game

Rayner Noble had a veeeeeery quick hook with Luis Flores, pulling him after he allowed two runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Houston: Bottom of Cougar lineup delivers

After retiring the first two batters in the bottom of the second, Joe Savery started nibbling against the bottom of the Cougars' lineup, allowing singles to Zak Presley and Bryan Pounds before walking Chris Wallace on a full count. Ryan Lormand followed by doing exactly what you would expect from a leadoff hitter: he worked a 3-1 count and then took what Savery gave him, punching the next pitch into short right-center to score two and give Houston a 2-1 lead.

Houston: Tacker's first start a success

With Ryne Tacker still building arm strength after spending the first three months of the season in the bullpen, Rice coach Wayne Graham inserted lefty Bobby Bramhall into the game to start the seventh inning.

Houston: Mop-up duty for Raviele

I figured Rayner Noble would leave John Touchton in the game for a while in order to save all of his bullpen arms for tomorrow, but after Touchton hit Danny Lehmann in the head with the first pitch of the sixth inning and allowed a single to Tyler Henley, Noble went to the 'pen.

Houston: Gayhart adds to Rice's lead

The normally light-hitting Jared Gayhart (.379 slugging percentage entering the game) guessed correctly on the first pitch from John Touchton, pulling an 86-mile-per-hour fastball over the wall in straightaway left field for a three-run home run and a 5-0 Owl lead.

Houston: Rice takes early lead

The early returns are good for Rice's Ryne Tacker, as the Owl offense staked him to an early 2-0 lead and Tacker helped himself with an outstanding defensive play.

Houston second baseman Ryan Lormand has the play of the game early in this one, as he ranged to the outfield grass toward first base to make a great back-handed grab, turn, and throw to first in time to beat Jared Gayhart, who runs well.
