Ducks Fly Together?

By Doug Kroll - January 16, 2008

As we all know by now, Oregon won't be playing baseball until 2009. So that poses the question, "What is George Horton's first recruiting class doing right now?" Not a whole heck of a lot. They are waiting around for a whole season to pass, and then a whole offseason, before they get underway.

Kudos to Jacob May of Oregon Daily Emerald, who's actually done some freelance work for CSTV.com this past football season, wrote a nice piece today about Horton's recruiting class, with a different angle than I've seen anywhere else so far. It turns out, Horton is worried that he may lose a couple kids from the recruiting class of 21 he's bringing in thus far to the MLB Draft, before they even put on a Ducks uniform.

How's that for a twist. That would be quite a distinction to have. They could be part of the first Oregon baseball class since 1980 and yet never play a game.

The two he's most worried about are from the JuCo ranks, Justin LaTempa and Zack Thornton, both pitchers are can light up a radar gun.

While most college coaches always have to worry about kids jumping, it's something that Horton has to deal with, with a class that he put together in only a couple of months time.

May quotes Horton saying that he would be surprised if LaTempa and Thornton come to school, and that would be for good reason.

Our friend John Manuel over at Baseball America had this to say about the two of them:

"LaTempa is probably the best JuCo pitcher in California, and he was a big deal out of high school (Class of 2005) and played one year ('06) at UC Irvine (5 appearances). Thornton is also big-- both are 6-4, and both guys throw low 90s. Thornton is at Ventura (Calif.) JC, and LaTempa is at Golden West JC."

You'd think if Horton can stick one of the two, the class is going to look that much better. But as Horton said, it's about a one in 100 chance.
