More Training

By Doug Kroll - January 10, 2008

Here's a lesson: look past the first two days of spring training to find more college vs. MLB games!! I made that mistake yesterday while looking at the spring training schedule, and left off a couple.

Here's a look at the few I missed. My apologies.

Feb. 28, Boston College at Boston Red Sox
We all remember what happened in last year's game. Despite the Eagles losing 9-1, Johnny Ayers made history as he ripped Daisuke Matsusaka's first pitch in a game in America for a double. It's one of two games the Sox will play against area schools on the same day, as Northeastern gets a crack as well.

Feb. 28, Northeastern at Boston Red Sox
The defending World Series champs open their spring training schedule not only against BC but also Northeastern, as they play an exhibition doubleheader. The Sox beat Northeastern 11-0 in last year's game, which just like 2008, was the Huskies' first of the season.

Feb. 29, USF at New York Yankees
Just like their archrivals, the Yanks will play two exhibition games against college teams, with the first coming against the Bulls of South Florida. A bunch of connections link the two squads. Former Yankee hero Tino Martinez is in his second season as a volunteer assistant with USF, while Yankees new pitching coach Dave Eiland pitched at the school back in the 80s. The last time they faced one another was back in 1982, a 9-1 win for the Yanks. The last two times they faced a professional team, they were outscored 26-2 in '99 and '00 against the D-Rays and the Phillies.

March 18, New York Yankees at Virginia Tech
When this game was announced, I wrote how great it was, which means a lot coming from a Mets fan! the Yankees made a $1 million contribution to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund and announced that they would visit the Hokies as a way to aid in the healing process of April 16th. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m. at English Field, and other details will be released when available. Should be an interesting day in Blacksburg to say the least. We'll see who actually travels.
