A few more notes

By Doug Kroll - February 22, 2008

A few more notes as we get settled in here in the top of the first inning. How about this for nostalgia? Oregon State starting pitcher Mike Stutes opened last season as part of a combined no-hitter, picking up the Beavers first win of the season at Hawaii-Hilo. Stutes then picked up his 12th win of the year in OSU's clinching game in the CWS Finals against UNC. A nice symmetric view of the Beavers 2007 campaign.

Pat Casey will hope for the same this year, but things are off to a rough start. After getting David Macias on a grounder to 2nd, Stutes then walked Jonathan White, allowed a single through the leftside to Dominic de la Osa, saw his third baseman Lonnie Lechelt throw wide to first on a Pedro Alvarez squibber to set up a bases loaded spot for Ryan Flaherty, who didn't disappoint.

Vandy's shortstop knocked one through the hole on the leftside to plate the first two runs of the ballgame, as Braden Wells' throw from left field barely missed gunning down de la Osa at the plate.

Stutes has settled down, striking out Alex Feinberg swinging and Shea Robin looking on a curveball on the outside corner to finish off the inning with somewhat limited damage.

After a half inning, it's Vandy with a 2-0 lead.
