Big Blue

As Michigan prepares for another big season in the Big Ten, they do so after coming off a year in which they were oh so close to Omaha. If you don't recall, Zach Putnam had a no-no through 8 2/3 in Corvallis, only to see the Beavers rally and win 1-0. They ran into a team of destiny a year ago, but is it time for the Wolverines to be that team this season?

Basically everyone's back off last year's squad that stunned many when they beat Vanderbilt with an Alan Oaks home run off No. 1 draft pick David Price (full preview story coming on Michigan next week). But they've got a new stadium as well.

A stadium in which they'll be able to host a Regional. Coach Maloney and his staff will be moving into their new digs at the Wilpon Complex at the end of the week. They couldn't be more ecstatic.

"It's amazing to share a dream, and then to see so many people jump on board the project," Maloney said. "It's a special moment. The kids have a great locker room and a nice hitting facility as well."

Of course one of those that jumped on board was New York Mets own Fred Wilpon, who donated $12 million back to his school to redo their stadium. If it had been done last year, the Wolverines would have hosted that Super Regional against Oregon State, and then who knows if the Beavers even get a chance at a second straight national title.

But that's all in the past.

The present features one of the best players in the country in two-way stud Zach Putnam (Putnam is ninth in the country in CSTV.com's Preseason Player of the Year Watch). Maloney says that the junior has the most work ethic of anyone he's ever seen, and that he's already throwing in the mid 90's...off a plastic mound.

That rumble in the desert against Arizona State on Feb. 28 and again on March 1 should be a couple of classics and they'll matchup against Wilpon's Mets on Feb. 26 for an exhibition before heading out to Arizona while they are in Florida to open the season against Villanova.

All of that travel is tough on a team, but it comes with the territory. They'll try and open their new digs on March 19 when Oakland comes to town. Hopefully for Maloney and his Wolverines, they'll be seeing the Big Ten Tournament and an NCAA Tournament too in Ann Arbor two months later.
