No Score In The Desert
By Doug Kroll - February 22, 2008
Yes that's right, Miami starter Chris Niro has actually held ASU hitless through his three innings of work, while ASU starter Josh Satow has allowed a hit so far to the RedHawks.
Not a terrible crowd on hand considering the rain earlier in the day, and the temperature at 55 degrees.
There was actually just another spit of rain. It just doesn't want to quit. In case you're thinking about making the trip out here from let's say, California (like a certain CSTV colleague I know), the rest of the weekend should be beautiful.
A couple notes from around the country:
-How did Indiana Tech, an NAIA school, beat Alabama A&M, 26-5? I'm sorry but a team from the NAIA should never, ever, ever, ever beat a Division I baseball team by 21 runs. There's just something very wrong with that. Maybe the worst part for AAMU, they have to go back out there for Game Two, as it was a doubleheader. The Warriors were 1-4 coming into the ballgame as well, so it's not as if they are the best team in the NAIA. Ugh, what a way to start off the year.
-Nebraska lost 17-5 to Stanford in the first game of a DH out in Palo Alto. Yikes. So much for turning the ship around. The Cornhuskers were up in the 2nd game at least.
-Arizona lost to Georgia 9-7. The Wildcats were ranked No. 1 by Collegiate Baseball. Perhaps a bit high, and it's never a good thing when your ace gets rocked in the first inning of the year. Preston Guilmet gave up four runs as the Dogs were on their way to a huge opening day win.
-Hat tip to a couple coaches, as Mike Gillespie picks up his first win as the head coach at UC Irvine, with a 6-0 win at Nevada. Scott Gorgen pitched well enough for the win. He did walk 6 although the Wolfpack could only manage 3 hits total, with only 1 off Gorgen in six innings. Meanwhile, the guy he replaced, Dave Serrano, is cruising with Fullerton at TCU, as the Titans lead it 9-2.
-Michigan got off to a great start, holding Villanova to only 2 hits in a 13-4 win at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie (home of the New York Mets Spring Training facility).
We are now in the bottom of the 4th, Niro has still not allowed a hit, as there is no score.
