Vandy Meets Miami (Ohio)

By Doug Kroll - February 24, 2008

TEMPE, Ariz. - We've reached the final day of the DeMarini Invitational here in Tempe, and our first game features the RedHawks of Miami against Vanderbilt. Miami has come up on the short end each of the last two days, getting shutout by Arizona State on Friday, and falling to Oregon State on Saturday. Hopefully playing during the day will help them on Sunday. As for Vanderbilt, after beating Oregon State on Friday, they fell hard on Saturday, 18-6 to Arizona State.

One huge note, Vandy slugger Pedro Alvarez is out of the lineup again with the same problem that kept him out yesterday. They are keeping him out because of some sort of arm injury. That's never good news for the Commodores.

On the mound today, for Vanderbilt is righty Nick Christiani, while Miami throws lefthander Matt Erwood. Christiani went 5-3 with a 4.11 ERA a year ago, while Erwood pitched in 9 games in 2007 including 2 starts while sporting a 6.88 ERA in 17 innings of work.

We'll see if Vandy can bounce back from yesterday's disappointment. Coach Corbin was real upset with the way things went down yesterday, and rightfully so. It was only the 2nd game of the year, but to lose 18-6 and issue 14 walks while your opponent committed 6 errors, that's a tough one to take.

As for the RedHawks, they have been competitive in the first two games, with a couple of nice pitching performances.

The weather is supposed to be real good, with temperatures getting up into the mid-70s, but so far it's overcast and cool with a sparse crowd thanks to ASU playing later in the day.

One note, the flags are at half staff with the passing of former Arizona governor Evan Mecham, who passed away at the age of 83.

Miami got on the board quickly in the first, thanks to a walk and some situational hitting. Tommy Nurre picked up the RBI on a groundout that plated Evan Armitage to give the RedHawks their first lead of the weekend.
