Welcome to 2008
By Doug Kroll - February 22, 2008
Through the rain and through internet problems here in Tempe, welcome to Packard Stadium on the campus of Arizona State, as we're set for the first annual DeMarini Invitational. Regarded as the best tourney in the country, three top 11 teams find themselves here to open the year, Arizona State, Oregon State and Vanderbilt. And of course Miami (Ohio).
First up, the two-time defending national champs, the Beavers, against the Commodores.
Your pitching matchup, it'll be righty Mike Stutes for OSU, and lefty Mike Minor for Vandy, as he looks to fill the void of losing No. 1 draft pick David Price.
The sun is trying to poke out from behind the clouds, but it's "cold" and wet. I say cold in quotes because I feel sorry for my colleagues back in the home office, who are stuck under 7 inches of snow, while it's 55 here. Yes I'm wearing shorts as we sit outside underneath a makeshift roof.
I'll tell the story of how you get up to the roof of the press box by the end of the weekend, but the first pitch of the season is about to take place. Mike Stutes is on the mound, and he'll face David Macias.
More to come from Tempe all day and night, with the Sun Devils set to face Miami (Ohio) at 7pm local time tonight.
