Full Slated Tuesday
By Doug Kroll - March 05, 2008
After such an amazing weekend of action, there's no way Tuesday could live up to the weekend we had, right? Wrong. Rice lost a slugfest, Irvine threw another shutout and Fullerton bounced back after a miserable weekend with a win over UCLA. And there's more.
-Ah, Rice. The No. 6 Owls followed up an impressive weekend sweep at the Minute Maid Classic with a not-so-impressive 13-12 loss at Sam Houston State Tuesday night. Rice blew leads of 5-0, 8-4, and a 12-9 lead in the 8th. Mike Ojala started for Rice and lasted 3.1 innings, giving up 4 runs. Jared Gayhart led the way for the Owls, driving in 3 runs, while Todd Sebek and Bobby Verbick each drove in 3 for the Bearkats. Rice falls to 6-3 while SHSU improves to 5-3.
-Those Anteaters have arms. UC Irvine recorded its 4th straight shutout on Tuesday night. After sweeping San Francisco with three shutouts over the weekend, Daniel Bibona shutdown San Diego 4-0. USD issued only one walk, while Bibona improved to 2-0 on the season by going 6 innings allowing only 4 hits while striking out 12 Torerros. Good stuff. The 'Eaters are now 8-0 while USD is a disappointing 5-5.
-Talk about a much-needed win. Fullerton was swept at Stanford over the weekend, and faced the daunting task of facing UCLA on Tuesday night, but luckily for the Titans they had Jeff Kaplan on the mound. The Fullerton ace went 6 scoreless innings in a 7-1 win, while striking out 8 and allowing only 2 hits. Third baseman Joel Weeks went 3-for-4 in the win.
-Wildest game of the day: East Carolina 20, Old Dominion 13
How about a 7 spot in the top of the 10th for the Pirates? Both teams are a disappointing 4-4.
