Volleyball Hands # 2 Washington First Loss

#21 UCLA defeated #2 Washington on Saturday in Pauley Pavilion, winning in five games by the scores of 34-32, 30-27, 28-30, 25-30, 15-13. The UCLA victory ended the Huskies' 23-match winning streak. The match marked significant personal achievements for UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski as well as for several players; Banachowski became the first collegiate womens volleyball coach in history to record 1,000 victories; junior middle blocker Nana Meriwether tied the school record for blocks in a match with 17; and both Katie Carter and Rachell Johnson had career-highs in kills with 23 and 21, respectively. UCLA improves to 16-8 (8-6 Pac-10) on the season while Washington falls to 23-1, 14-1 Pac-10.

Josh Shipp Has Surgery
josh%20shipp.jpg Sophomore shooting guard Josh Shipp had successful arthroscopic right hip surgery today and will miss 8-12 weeks of basketball action for recovery and rehabilitation. Doctors at the SoCal Orthopedic Institute repaired torn cartilage and removed a bone spur from his hip area. Shipp was a key member of the Bruins' starting rotation last season, averaging 9.3 points and 5.2 rebounds in 27.9 minutes. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound guard injured his hip playing basketball during the summer. ``I`m very pleased that the outcome was a successful one and we`re looking forward to having Josh back as soon as he is completely healed,`` coach Ben Howland said.
Who's Ready for 3-0?

subscribe_promo-ucla_player.jpgOff to a 2-0 start after last week's 63-21 rout of Rice, the UCLA football squad can make a statement this Saturday at the Rose Bowl against Oklahoma. This game has so many intriguing factors: Will Adrian Peterson start for the Sooners, and will the much-maligned UCLA defense be able to stop him? Can Drew Olson continue his stellar quarterback play? Will Maurice Drew put up big numbers in honor of his grandfather, who passed away last Saturday? UCLA is favored against the Sooners, and if the Bruins pull this one out, they will probably crack the top-25 rankings for the first time since November of 2002.
