The match marked significant personal achievements for UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski as well as for several players; Banachowski became the first collegiate womens volleyball coach in history to record 1,000 victories; junior middle blocker Nana Meriwether tied the school record for blocks in a match with 17; and both Katie Carter and Rachell Johnson had career-highs in kills with 23 and 21, respectively. Sophomore shooting guard Josh Shipp had successful arthroscopic right hip surgery today and will miss 8-12 weeks of basketball action for recovery and rehabilitation. Doctors at the SoCal Orthopedic Institute repaired torn cartilage and removed a bone spur from his hip area.
Shipp was a key member of the Bruins' starting rotation last season, averaging 9.3 points and 5.2 rebounds in 27.9 minutes. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound guard injured his hip playing basketball during the summer.
